THE WOMEN'S UNIVERSITY CLUB OF SEATTLE

If You Only Had 24 Hours in Seattle

Cafe Presse on 12th near Madison is a favorite of mine. Stop in and have a cup of coffee with a pastry or pretend you're in Paris and have a demi-carafe of wine with lunch. Enjoy the food and the company of friends. The place is nothing fancy; exposed brick walls and simple painted tables, but the fare is consistently good.

How about an urban hike after lunch? Walking through the Arboretum always does wonders for my state of mind. Is it raining? Check out the latest exhibition at SAM or the Frye Museum instead and finish the day with dinner downtown.”

My 24 hours-in-Seattle would be: breakfast at Pike Place Market, monorail to Seattle Center for the Space Needle on a clear day and/or Chihuly Garden & Glass; picnic & walk around Green Lake; drive over 520 Bridge and back on the I-90 bridge and happy hour/dinner at Salty's on Alki.”

I would begin with a ferry ride to Bainbridge with a stop at the Blackbird Bakery in Winslow and then on to Poulsbo to window shop and lunch. The Pike Place Market is a must to forage for salad makings and seafood for dinner with a stop at Three Girls Bakery for a baguette. A gooey dessert at the french cafe for dessert.

If time is available, I'd take them to the Attic at Salish Lodge for wine and a casual lunch or dinner and a peek at the falls. Hopefully there would be a farmer selling flowers at a roadside stand on the way home (would not take the freeway).”

We'd go to Theo Chocolate for the tour, then stroll along the Cut, checking out the topiary dinosaur etc. We might go to Cultivate, the UW student-staffed restaurant in the U District. Or we might go to Bar Ferdinand in Chop Alley on Capitol Hill for a glass of wine!”

"

I do this a lot. I like Wild Ginger for a first meal, then other great Tom Douglas places and Thai spots including Thai Tom's on the Ave. Drive to the troll, of course, and Lenin, the Sleepless in Seattle boats, UW, Queen Anne overlook and Parsons Garden. I take them to WUC, the Roastery, Capital Hill, Chihuly Museum, around the Seattle Center.

I try to find a lecture or an author for at least one evening - preferably in Town Hall or Central Library. We walk to the Spheres, AmazonGo, eat Shake Shack, then to Japanese Garden.”

"

A driving tour that covers classic Seattle views—Magnolia bluff overlooking Puget Sound, Kerry Park overlooking Elliott Bay, looking at downtown Seattle through the Black. sun sculpture in Volunteer Park, Interlaken Blvd looking towards the Eastside. As I drive I talk about Seattle’s history and the diverse character of its neighborhoods.

We pick up a picnic at Pike Place Market, walk down the hill climb to the waterfront and take a round trip ferry ride to Bainbridge Island. I would finish dinner Staple and Fancy in Ballard as representative of the fabulous creativity of our foodie town. If there was still energy, I would take them to a play at Seattle Repertory or ACT.

I always like to recommend the classic Fairmont Olympic as the most Seattle hotel.”

"

I would take my friends to Discovery Park and walk there. Then stop by Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center. After that, drive to Arboretum Park and visit the Japanese Garden.

We would then have lunch and beer at Magnuson Café & Brewery overlooking Lake Washington.”

The Olympic Sculpture Park (SAM) for a picnic and the views; Seattle Center for iconic Seattle sites; Pike Market and Downtown Seattle; Westward (on North Lake Union) for Oysters on the water; Georgetown for Mexican Food and the Corson House; Starbucks HQ for the cafe and bar; Four Seasons for any meal; The Deep Dive for cocktails in the Amazon spheres; Ballard for the boutiques and restaurants; Mercerwood Shore Club for the beach and lake; Watson Kennedy for shopping; Uwajimaya and the International District for shopping and eating.”

"

My perfect day for an out-of-towner would start by walking on the Bremerton ferry at the Seattle Waterfront. A 1 ½ hour ride across Elliot Bay and through the Rich Passage is always beautiful regardless of the weather. Lunch in Bremerton and the voyage back gives a great wind-down before the arrival back in Seattle.

The fun then accelerates with the elevator to the Columbia Center Sky View Observatory for their magnificent views. The day must finish at a waterfront restaurant at the North end of Lake Union, preferably at a dockside table. There you will witness barges, crew teams, yachts and the lone paddle boarder; a true spectrum that represents Seattle.”
